Don’t Feed your Cat these Things

You love your cat and want to feed it right. There are things you should not let it eat. Some are surprising like raw fish and some are things you love to eat. Just don’t share them with the kitty in your life.

You see pictures of cats hanging around the docks waiting for the fishing boats to come in to get some of that fresh fish.

I was surprised to find out that raw fish is damaging because it destroys thiamine. Thiamine is a B vitamin. A deficiency of thiamin can cause seizures and death. So make sure fish is cooked before letting your cat eat it.

Onions are toxic to cats whether eaten raw or cooked. They destroy red blood cells and anemia results. Onion powder found in baby food or other preparations is also dangerous. Do not even give table scraps with onions in it. Spaghetti sauce tastes yummy with onions but don’t let kitty indulge.

Some people think garlic pills or powder repels fleas in cats. This has never been proven, but they do know that garlic damages the red blood cells that carry oxygen through the body. Buy some quality flea control from your vet or a pet department.

You might crave chocolate but don’t give it to your cat. It will cause vomiting and diarrhea which is no fun for your feline or for you.

It also contains caffeine. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate contains theobromine which can cause vomiting and diarrhea in large quantities. Even a small amount can hurt your cat. Save the chocolate for yourself and give your cat a treat made for him.

Nutritionists can’t tell you why grapes and raisins are dangerous to cats but they can cause kidney failure and death.

Raw eggs are often teeming with Salmonella and other bacteria. They also contain avidin, another enzyme that destroys a B vitamin, biotin this time. The body can’t absorb it thereby causing a deficiency.

Did you ever hear of yellow fat disease? Your cat can get it by eating oil packed tuna. Tuna is also addictive and your cat could refuse to eat anything else. Tuna as an occasional treat or a cat food flavor is okay but only once in a while.

I have fed my cats some dog food in a pinch, but it is not recommended. Dog food does not contain taurine which is important for its immune system health. Always feed your cats food formulated for cats.

Keep your cat healthy and happy by feeding it food formulated for felines. Don’t feed it raw fish, garlic, onions, chocolate, grapes and raisins, raw eggs, tuna as a regular part of the diet, or dog food.
